Chinese get their second win against Malta

For the first time in eight years, China’s water polo players have qualified for the World Championships this year. At the World Aquatics Water Polo World Cup, there may soon be another opportunity for the team from Asia to measure themselves against the world’s best. At the tournament in Berlin, after their second victory, China must definitely be regarded as one of the first contenders for one of the two tickets for the Super Final in Los Angeles (USA) at the end of June.

The Chinese defeated Malta 18-6 (5-2, 5-0, 4-3, 4-1) on Friday evening, with Zhang Chufeng being the top scorer with four goals. Although Malta scored the first goal of the game, the Chinese then quickly took control. After the first quarter they led 5:2, at half time already 10:2, much to the delight of coach Petar Porobic, who previously also coached the German team.

The Maltese gave their all, by the end of the game they were just one shot short of the Chinese goal (shots were 30:31) – but there Honghui Wu proved almost invincible and was rightly named player of the match. As the game progressed, the Chinese’s superiority became clear on the scoreboard. On Saturday (7:15 p.m.) they will meet Germany for their final game of the preliminary round.
